Population A: India-like, youthful
After 25 years:
Large cohorts enter adulthood before smaller future cohorts replace them.
Estimated time: 20–30 minutes. Includes the activity and its built-in responses. Extra assignments may take longer.
India’s fertility has fallen dramatically. Its population can nevertheless continue growing. The missing variable is not hidden in the future; it is alive in the age structure of the present.
Approximate 2025 population in the UN’s medium projection.
Fertility: roughly 1.9 births per woman.
Replacement-level fertility is often simplified to about 2.1 births per woman. India is now near or below that level, but a population does not stop like a faucet. Millions of people already born are moving into the years when families are formed.
If fertility fell immediately to 1.7, would India’s population begin shrinking at once? Hold your answer until you run the experiment.
This simplified 2025 age structure is calibrated to the broad shape of UN estimates. Hover or tap an age band. Which cohorts will become parents, workers, and older dependents during the next thirty years?
Each bar shows half of the cohort, separated for visual familiarity rather than to model sex differences.
Choose assumptions, then advance five years at a time. This is a transparent teaching model—not an official forecast. Its purpose is to isolate cause and effect.
Population in billions. The orange point is the year you have reached.
Both populations below begin with 1.46 billion people and adopt fertility of 1.7. Their only important difference is age structure.
After 25 years:
Large cohorts enter adulthood before smaller future cohorts replace them.
After 25 years:
Fewer people enter childbearing ages while more move into high-mortality ages.
Fertility describes reproductive behavior. Age structure describes how many people are positioned to reproduce, age, and die. Population momentum is the growth or decline carried forward by that structure even after fertility changes.
Choose the best explanation, then write the result in your own geographical language.
India’s total fertility rate falls below replacement. Why might the national population continue increasing for decades?
In three or four sentences, explain why “fertility below replacement” and “population shrinking” are not synonyms. Use age structure, cohort, and momentum.
